30 September - Lump sum death benefits

The Rules of the TfL Pension Fund are being changed with effect from 1 January 2006 to give the Trustees absolute discretion over who should receive payment of lump sums payable on a member's death. This will allow the Trustees to pay lump sum death benefits to one or more persons and in such shares as they decide.

If you are a contributing member or a deferred pensioner of the Fund we will be sending you a letter later on this year asking you to complete an Expression of Wish form showing your choice of beneficiaries and the share of any lump sum death benefit you would like each to receive. We will also send you an information sheet providing you with more details about this.

If you have already retired and have been receiving your pension for longer than two years it is unlikely that a lump sum death benefit will be payable when you die unless you retired on health grounds or did not accept a lump sum on retirement. The Fund Office will communicate with retired members as appropriate in the first quarter of 2006.

If you are still in service, it is important, to ensure that SAP or your Human Resources Office is holding your current address.

If you are a deferred member, please telephone the Fund Office if you have changed address.

If you have not received a letter asking you to complete an Expression of Wish form by 31 December 2005, and are a deferred or active member, please telephone the Fund Office on 020-7918-3733.
