Quantity Surveying – Rail and Underground

Applications for the 2012 intake are now closed

Apply now

Our underground system dates back to 1863. So one of the biggest challenges we face is upgrading our existing infrastructure. We've also got to continue running an efficient service.

That makes this an exciting time to be part of TfL within the Rail and Underground area. You'll contribute to our development programme while we transform the Tube and build an underground network that's fit for the 21st century. You may also work within other areas of the rail infrastructure such as London Overground, DLR and Crossrail.

Join the Quantity Surveying scheme within the Rail and Underground area and you'll play a valuable role in a number of high profile and complex projects. These could include the modernisation of Tottenham Court Road, the £500m redevelopment of Victoria Underground station or upgrading the Tube network and other major infrastructure works. We'll encourage you to apply your theoretical knowledge and make a significant contribution to critical projects.

Placements

You'll have the chance to work on a range of initiatives in Rail and Underground and across other areas of TfL, especially in the second year. You'll also work towards your Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) chartership. Each placement will be structured to support your personal development needs, and will include:

  • Construction processes for engineering projects, internally and externally
  • Contract administration
  • Decision-making and the preparation of cost estimates
  • Advising on construction, planning, regulations and standards
  • Design processes from conception to implementation

Operational placements

You'll also get a feel for how we do things on an operational level, with practical experience of working in one of London Underground's or TfL's operational services. Whether it's trains, stations, service control or other operational areas, it'll prove invaluable for your success on the scheme and throughout your career.

Our Operational Learning team will make sure you develop the safety critical qualifications, people management skills and technical knowledge you need should you undertake a direct operational role. They'll also shadow you to make sure you enjoy and make the most of your placement.

You'll be contracted to work a minimum 35-hour week. Your three-month placement in an operational environment may involve varied hours, including weekend working and following shift patterns, dependent on your role. Office-based placements will generally involve working during usual office hours.

Further education and professional studies

We take your development seriously, and will support and encourage you with your professional studies. You'll receive hands-on experience on some of our key projects, as well as the professional development you need to work towards achieving RICS chartered status.
