A huge range of experiences

I have always had an interest in transport and often wondered how transport systems worked in a mega-city such as London. My degree was in Information Systems, so when the opportunity came up with TfL in its Information Management graduate scheme, I went for it. The scheme is structured with various four-month placements in a range of IT roles in different teams across TfL. In my two years, I have done placements in Project/Programme Support, Intranet Support, Release Management, Training and Business Analysis.

New challenges that lead to great learning

The great thing about being on the Information Management Graduate Scheme is that there is no typical day for me. Today I can be supporting on a programme or project, my next placement might see me researching and meeting with stakeholders as a Business Analyst, or giving IT training to staff in the Underground stations. There are new challenges every day and I often find myself in new situations where I have to adapt quickly to a steep learning curve. I'm not left to my own devices of course, my placement managers and colleagues are always available to help.

A job that makes a real difference

Unlike many other jobs, working for TfL is an interesting relationship where we are the transport service providers and the customer at the same time. I use the public transport system and when the trains, buses and roads in London are running smoothly, I feel good being a part of that contribution. When there are problems, delays and road gridlocks, I also feel the pain with the rest of London. I can see the work I do reflected in the environment I live in and that motivates me to want to do the job even better. Working for TfL means that I am more than just a wage slave and I know that the work I do makes a difference for people.

A job worth getting up for!

It is a great organisation to work for especially knowing that TfL is committed to the Green Agenda, equality and inclusion and promoting equal opportunities in the workplace for all. Also the perks of having a final salary pension scheme, private medical insurance, 30 days annual leave and free travel in London helps too! Waking up every day looking forward to getting to work in an almost family-like social environment, supportive of my career progression, where the work I do makes a difference in the city I live in, re-enforces that my decision to join TfL two years ago was one of the most rewarding choices I have made so far in my life.
