Value for money and engaging with the external market to deliver our service is the key here.
Commercial has an important role to play to deliver value for money in projects, infrastructure maintenance, supply deliveries and engagement with the external market for a vast range of products and services.
On our Commercial scheme, you'll develop expertise in working with our supply partners in letting and managing contracts to achieve commercial value creatively and effectively for our business and passengers.
Here you'll help us to oversee the management and letting of multi-billion pound, Private Finance Initiative (PFI), maintenance and upgrade contracts along with services and materials supply.
You may also become involved in major Commercial Development opportunities, as part of the wider TfL, which are used to support the delivery of transport services to the public. This could include major revenue opportunities such as advertising and communication systems.
You'll be involved with:
- Competitively letting major contracts for a range of services, construction activities, and supplies for maintenance and delivery which will develop legal and commercial skills
- Supporting day-to-day operational service with ongoing commercial management to enhance your customer and commercial effectiveness
- Supporting the delivery of major upgrades through contractual and commercial negotiations
- Procuring and managing commercial arrangements
- Managing contractual relationships for the maintenance of existing assets including materials' supply to ensure effective and business focused day-to-day delivery of the railway infrastructure and service
- Engaging with suppliers on market initiatives to develop their and our understanding of business and commercial opportunities
- Developing sourcing and procurement strategies for a range of services and assets so as best to engage with the external supply market in the delivery of all contracted services
It gives you an idea of the scope of our work - and the unparalleled experience you'll enjoy.
Placements
Procurement, commercial management (including asset maintenance) of all types of contracts, and managing PFI contracts are our core areas. So that's where your placements will be.
Plus of course, you'll also have the chance to try other areas across TfL in the second year of the scheme.
Operational placements
You'll also get a feel for how we do things on an operational level, with practical experience of working in one of London Underground's or TfL's operational services. Whether it's trains, stations, service control or other operational areas, it'll prove invaluable for your success on the scheme and throughout your career.
Our Operational Learning team will make sure you have the safety-critical qualifications, people management skills and technical knowledge you need should you undertake a direct operational role. They'll also shadow you to make sure you enjoy and make the most of your placement.
You'll be contracted to work a minimum 35-hour week. Depending on which department you work in, your hours will vary. Office-based placements will generally involve working during usual office hours. Your three month placement, if in an operational environment, may involve varied hours, including weekend working and following shift patterns, dependent on your role.
Further education and professional studies
We want to see your career progress as much as you do. This is why we support and encourage you with your professional studies - including achieving graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). When you've completed the scheme, the role you'll go into will give you the experience needed to gain Chartered status with your chosen professional body.
