The Oyster card and Congestion Charge. You may use them, you'll certainly have heard of them and maybe you even have an idea of their importance to London's transport. But who keeps them up and running? The answer is TfL's Information Management (IM) teams.

IM has direct responsibility for many of the complex systems that underpin the services used by millions of Londoners every day and a major role in many others.

Now you can play your part too. The Graduate Scheme offers you the chance to sample all that's involved in providing an information technology service to one of the world's largest and most sophisticated public transport networks.

A technical background won't be essential - but the ability to look at technology from a strictly business perspective will be. You'll enjoy variety across a number of specialist areas including:

  • Business Relationship Management
  • Technology Design and Innovation
  • Programme and Project Delivery
  • Shared Service Delivery Management

Placements

TfL is responsible for all modes of public transport in London including buses, the Tube, taxis, the Docklands Light Railway, trams, cycling - even improving the city for pedestrians. You'll get involved in delivering the IT which supports all of these and, working on a rotational basis, your placements will span a variety of information and technology services. They could include some or all of the following:

Business Partners/Business Relationship Management

If Information Management is to make a noticeable impact on our business, we have to engage with the various departments and teams throughout TfL. That's the job of our Business Partners who, together with their team of Business Relationship Managers, ensure IM is a trusted strategic partner to the Business. Working closely with our customers, the team helps shape the way technology is applied, identify areas of opportunity and maximise the benefit to our customers - the travelling public.

Communications

TfL has 28,000 people doing a huge variety of jobs, each requiring specific skills. Improving your communication management abilities, you'll work with the training, communications and intranet development teams who support these workers. You will:

  • Learn to understand and accommodate operational restrictions
  • Develop strategies and skills to interact with our customer base
  • Manage and monitor intranet content
  • Learn to apply Government and corporate standards and policies

Service and Operations

From a user's desktop to SAP applications, Service and Operations manages many of the key IT services used by TfL. The team upholds strict Service Level Agreements agreed with the business, applied to both in-house services and those supplied by third parties, such as O2 which supplies our Blackberry service.

Everything the team do is geared around delivering a quality customer service through strong ITIL based processes.

Project and Programme Delivery

The Project and Programme Delivery team ensures our IM programme is aligned directly with the needs of the business. As part of the team, you could find yourself working on the delivery of IT infrastructure, new business applications or establishing new contracts. Whatever the project, the goal is always the same - continuous improvement in our service to the Business.

Strategy and Technology

As a centre for IT enterprise design and innovation, the Strategy and Technology team supplies the necessary expertise to ensure TfL's enterprise architecture and related technology run smoothly and effectively - including strategic business system platforms, technical and functional infrastructure and IT security.

Further education and professional studies

Working with senior management throughout the scheme, you'll be given practical advice, ideas and guidance on how to progress. You'll also have reviews and objectives to support your development at every stage. And, after around 18 months, we'll see what your aspirations are to ensure you get the ideal role with us once you've completed the scheme.

You'll also enjoy technical, business and management training opportunities that will eventually lead to chartered IT professional status.
