TfL Corporate

TfL Corporate supports the Mayor's Transport Strategy by providing a strategic overview of the whole transport network. It manages government funding negotiations and develops TfL's fares policy and ticketing systems. It also produces, costs and monitors TfL's Business Plan, Budget and Investment Programme.

Business Finance - Surface Transport 

The Surface Transport Business Finance - Surface Transport team is responsible for all aspects of financial management, business planning and financial performance relating to all non-rail transport in London, including the maintenance and development of the Capital's major roads, managing the Bus Network and Congestion Charge.   

A placement with Surface Transport Finance would help develop skills in financial planning and analysis, financial and management accounting, and business performance management. 

You'll be supporting the operational teams delivering many of the Mayor's flagship schemes including the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme, Barclays Cycle Superhighways and a New Bus for London.

Business Finance - London Underground 

Join us in Business Finance - London Underground and you'll develop expertise in:

  • Financial and business accounting
  • Business planning and forecasting
  • Financial analysis and performance
  • Benchmarking
  • Investment control and project analysis

Together the teams oversee all aspects of financial management, business planning and financial performance for the iconic London Underground.

Placements

Your placements will be carefully chosen, taking into account the requirements of your professional qualification, your own ambitions, and the advice of your scheme sponsor.

As you progress, the placements will become more challenging to reflect your personal and professional development.

Year one: You'll take part in three placements in business accounting, financial shared services and business planning. Plus an operational placement in a key business area.

Year two: Your three placements are chosen by you and your scheme sponsor.

They could include investment and project appraisal, investment control, internal audit, corporate tax, commercial finance, financial accounting, group treasury or others.

Year three: This will be two longer, in-depth placements contributing to special projects within a finance team.

Options include rail, commercial finance, or strategy and business planning and will complement your intended career path.

Further education and professional studies

You'll be able to study for membership of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

We'll give you a highly competitive study package, including full study support (all professional body registration, course fees, etc) and leave for class attendance and exams.

Duration

Three years

Entry requirements and minimum criteria

You'll need a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in maths, business, economics, accounting and finance or statistics.

We don't need you to have in-depth technical skills at the start of the scheme, but you are expected to learn quickly through a combination of off-site technical courses, on-the-job training and the experience of your team.

  • Graduate in appropriate discipline with appropriate classification - 2:1
  • Ability to work on site where necessary
  • High standards of written communication, verbal, numerical and inductive (ability to deal with ambiguous data) reasoning
  • High standards of verbal communication
  • Skilled in analysis and problem solving
  • Keen on embracing change
  • Collaborative, and keen to share information, knowledge and skills

  • Be able to identify the goals of any project and work steadily towards them
  • Able to take a structured and methodical approach to any task, identifying priorities and setting deadlines

If you're successful you'll have to pass pre-employment checks before joining.

These will include reference checks, qualifications checks, right to work in the UK and in some cases a medical and a Criminal Records Bureau check.
