GLA Economics publishes an overview of London's Logistics Sector
13 August 2009
GLA Economic's Working Paper 37 provides a descriptive overview of the logistics sector and its importance to the London economy.
Some of the key findings of this working paper(PDF 3.86MB) include:
- In 2007 the London logistics sector's output was £8bn (3.4 per cent of London's output) and it directly employed over 220,000 people (5.2 per cent of London's employees), an additional 80,000 people performed logistics occupations in other industries
- Those with qualifications equivalent to NVQ level 2 earned substantially more within the logistics sector than in London's labour market as a whole, as did workers with no qualifications
- At a regional level London does not specialise in logistics and this function is generally served by companies based elsewhere in the country. Logistics businesses in London are concentrated in the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Bexley, Enfield, Hounslow, Hillingdon and Wandsworth
