Data, modelling and best practice

Freight Data Report

There isn't as much data available for freight movement as there is for the movement of people.

That's why we're working hard to understand better the role freight transport plays in maintaining London's status as a world-class city. These are the questions we're trying to answer with help from industry and academic partners:

  • What are the best ways of improving delivery reliability?
  • Are out-of-hours deliveries cost-effective for freight operators?
  • Do out-of-hours deliveries help cut congestion?
  • Can an electronic system for reserving loading bays help operators avoid PCNs?

London Freight Data Report

We publish this report annually. It examines trends in freight movement across the Capital and helps our research partners focus on areas where information is lacking.

Modelling

To help forecast the impact that policy developments could have on the freight industry, we're using computer modelling and working on a comprehensive model that could accurately predict peak time freight movement a decade in advance.

Freight Environmental Review System

The Freight Environment Review System (FERS) is a tool for assessing and rating freight activity in streets. It can be used to quickly and cost-effectively assess the quality and suitability of streets in terms of loading capacity, signage, access routes, safety and provision for specialist industries such as cash-in-transit and brewery.

Case studies

We are helping raise standards in the industry by sharing examples of best practice. If you'd like to learn more, take a look at our publications.

The SUGAR project

We're one of the four best practise partners in the Sustainable Urban Goods logistics Achieved by Regional and local policies (SUGAR) project, an EU project that promotes best practice in the field of urban freight management.

We hosted the project consortium meeting in November 2010. More information is available on the SUGAR website.
