You asked

I am writing to request the peak and off peak cap for contactless journeys starting at (or involving) Welwyn Garden City. It is inexplicably missing from the linked documents on this page https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/national-rail-fares-beyond-zone-9

We answered

Our ref: FOI-0393-2425/GH

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 3 May 2024 asking for information about the Contactless cap for Welwyn Garden City.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

By way of background, we can advise that as the number of Network Rail (NR) stations outside Z1-9 accepting Pay As You Go (PAYG) increased, it wasn’t tenable to keep expanding the ‘Adult Caps & Travelcards Beyond Z1-9’ PDF for PAYG extensions where TfL neither set the prices or have service which serve the station.

TfL publish caps and Travelcard prices for stations where our services run, or where Oyster is accepted. But exclusively NR stations only accepting Contactless Payment Cards (CPC) for PAYG aren’t included on our website.

The Train Operating Companies (TOCs) were made aware of this plan in 2019 and encouraged to publish prices on their own websites.

In response to your specific request, the Welwyn Garden City caps to/from Z1-6 are:

Daily anytime              Daily Off-peak             Weekly
£34.70                         £25.10                         £131.00

We have now amended the wording on our website to be clear that we are only displaying caps and Travelcard prices for NR stations beyond Z9 where our services run, or that accept Oyster.

Please let me know if this is not the information you are looking for. If you are not satisfied with this response please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
